Pollution Prevention declared next week

Saratoga Mayor Gillian Moran declared Sept. 15-21 to be Pollution Prevention Week, an opportunity "for government, industry and environmental organizations to recognize the potential of pollution prevention."

The move came at the City Council's meeting Sept. 3. In her declaration, Moran urged all residents and businesses to participate in regional celebratory and educational activities.

Supervisor Simitian to observe election in Bosnia

Santa Clara County Supervisor Joe Simitian announced last week that he will serve as an elections supervisor for the Bosnian municipal elections to be held in Bosnia and Herzegovina Sept. 13-14.

Simitian and other members of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe team will monitor the voting process and subsequent vote count in the elections in the former Yugoslavian republic. Simitian was notified in late August by the U.S. State Department that he had been chosen and was selected in part because of his extensive municipal background, having served as a local school board president and mayor in Palo Alto before joining the county board of supervisors, as well as his legal background. Also, Simitian is experienced as an elections observer; he participated in the White House delegation to observe the 1994 presidential elections in El Salvador.

The delegation is scheduled to arrive in Bosnia Sept. 7. Simitian said he will return Sept. 20.

Joint meeting on the agenda

The Saratoga City Council is scheduled to meet with the Saratoga Union School District and the Los Gatos- Saratoga Joint Union High school District at 7 p.m. on Sept. 23 in the Senior Day Care of the Community Center on Allendale Avenue. Topics of discussion will include the joint development of play fields at the schools, the school resource officer, the boundary issue and the proposals for changing school district boundaries made by the county and the school board, and the issue of closed campuses during lunch.
