    Vikings Opener

The West Valley Community College football team will play its home opener this week when the Vikings host the City College of San Francisco in a 3 p.m. game Friday, Sept. 14.

The Vikings lost their season opener 29-0 to Chabot last Saturday.

David Macchi (Willow Glen) hooked up on 9-of-18 passes for 68 yards and also carried three times for 19 yards to lead the WVC offense.

Macchi hit Paul Garces with a couple of passes for 13 yards, and completed two each to Todd Brando and Heath Ferreira (Valley Christian).

David Jackson led the ground attack with 32 yards on six carries, Billy Stouffer (Westmont) added 24 yards on four tries and Ferreira picked up 23 yards on six attempts.

    Dons fall to Jags

Peter Salazar tossed a couple of touchdown passes, but the De Anza Community College football team lost its opener 47-16 to San Jose City College last Saturday.

The Dons and Jaguars were tied 7-7 after a period, but San Jose outscored De Anza 26-7 over the next two quarters to pull in front.

Salazar is one of four Del Mar grads returning to the De Anza squad this season. He's joined by free safety Rueben Mastin, tailback Robert Harp and wide receiver Yu Nguyen.

Among the other returning sophomores for the Dons this fall is outside tight end Frank Marotti Jr., a Prospect grad.

The Dons will go after their first win of the 2001 season when they play their home opener on Saturday, Sept. 15, 1 p.m., against Yuba College.

    McIntyre wins

David McIntyre of Saratoga was the winner of the heavyweight division at the Aug. 18 Dammit Run in Los Gatos. McIntyre covered the 4-mile course in 38:38 to take the blue ribbon in the division. Dammit Run results incorrectly listed another runner as the heavyweight winner.

    Ron's Wildlife Run

The 18th annual Ron's Wildlife Run, a benefit for the Youth Science Institute, returns to Vasona Park on Sept. 16, 7 a.m. The event features three different races: a 10K run, a 5K stride and a 2K kids event. The suggested race donation is $25.

    NJB All-Net basketball tryouts

The Saratoga NJB All-Net basketball program will hold tryouts for boys in grades eight and under on Sept. 16 and 23 in the Saratoga High School gym.

Tryouts will be held each Sunday from 3-5 p.m. for boys in sixth grade and under; 5-7 p.m. for boys in seventh grade; and 7-9 p.m. for boys in eighth grade. Players should attend both tryout sessions.

Each player must be accompanied by a parent at the All-Net registration, which begins one hour prior to each tryout time. The registration fee is $250. Parent or legal guardian must bring a player's proof of residency (PG&E bill).

The All-Net program was created to further the skills of players who are interested in playing high school basketball. It is highly competitive and only 10 players are selected for each team. Players must be residents of Saratoga or reside in the Saratoga Union School District.
