City gives its OK to begin repairing the Tank Trail
By Rebecca Ray
Saratoga City Council approved the expenditure of $16,800 to repair a section of Parker Ranch Trail, a half-mile trail that runs from Parker Ranch Road to Fremont Older Open Space Preserve. The city closed the "Tank Trail"--the part of Parker Ranch Trail that runs from Parker Ranch Road to Picea Court--two years ago due to a landslide.
Council members gave trail contractor Donald Hays the go-ahead to fix the "Tank Trail," which extends about 850 feet, at the Aug. 15 Council meeting. Hays will begin to repair the trail as soon as he finishes another project, and should have the trail fixed before the rainy season, said City Public Works Director John Cherbone. Cherbone estimates the rainy season to begin in late October.
Hays plans to build a stepped inset gravity wall against the landslide, which occurred on the downhill side of the trail. The wall will look like a concrete staircase, except that the top part will be narrower than the bottom.
Each year since the Tank Trail was washed-out six years ago, the rains made it progressively more dangerous, until the city was forced to close it. Mountain bikers made the trail, which was designated for pedestrian and equestrian use only, even more dangerous by contributing to erosion.
