Library group to hold a book sale
The Friends of the West Valley Library holds its annual book sale on Sept. 15 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the public library located at 123 San Tomas Aquino Road at Saratoga Avenue. All proceeds go toward funding new materials, books and ongoing programs for the library. Call 408.244.4766 .
Adventurer tells of desert sojourn
As part of its ongoing series of community programs, REI Saratoga has invited Phil Hassrick of Lost Frontiers to give a slide presentation, "Sahara Sojourn," on Sept. 18 at 7 p.m. Hassrick will show and tell of his trek along the ancient routes traveled by salt caravans in the vast Sahara Desert in the African country of Niger.
REI is in the El Paseo de Saratoga shopping center. There is no charge to attend this event; all ages are welcome. Call 408.871.8765.
Workshop focus is on parenting skills
Throughout the year, Saratoga's Hakone Gardens offers a variety of programs and classes dealing with arts, crafts, culture and wellness. In that vein, Saratogan Mady Trask will lead a workshop called Conscious Parenting on Thursdays from Sept. 13 through Oct. 25, 9:30 to 11:30 a.m..
Using a combination of Eastern and Western philosophy, Trask will give parents useful information, insights and tools with which to create loving, responsible and respectful relationships with their children.

Rec Department goes on a cruise
The Saratoga Recreation Department is taking reservations now for its Oct. 4 day trip to Oakland that begins with a guided tour of the stately Mormon Temple. A hosted lunch follows in Jack London Square. Afterwards, the group sets sail aboard the U.S.S. Potomac for a narrated history cruise.
Adults of all ages are welcome. Cost is $79 per person. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended. Call 408.868.1248 or 408.868.1249 for reservations.
