Tea ceremony planned
Drinking a cup of tea and partaking in a Japanese tea ceremony are two completely different experiences, and Hakone Gardens in Saratoga, 21000 Big Basin Way, invites all interested members of the public to drive up to the secluded grounds in the Saratoga hills on Sept. 17, and take tea as they would in Japan.
Bay Area practitioners of the Omote Senke tradition of tea ceremonies will conduct three public teas at Hakone's Cultural Exchange Center, at 1:30, 2:30 and 3:30 p.m. Each ceremony lasts approximately 45 minutes; participants can sit in the authentic tea room, or in the view area adjacent to it, depending upon the number of participants. Each guest receives a bowl of Japanese green tea and a tea sweet. Santa Cruz-based attorney Stewart Lenox will also be on hand to assist in the ceremony and talk about the CEC's exhibit of Japanese tea utensils, that come from Lenox's personal collection.
A donation of $5 per person benefits the Hakone Gardens tea program. For reservations or directions to Hakone, call 408.741.4994.
