    Church holds tea reception

Saratogan Andy Eschenfelder has released his latest book, A Guide to Living Intentionally in this Complex World, and will be honored at a tea reception on Sept. 26 at 4 p.m. at the Saratoga Federated Church, 20390 Park Place. In his book, Eschenfelder offers readers tips in the pursuit of a lifelong and life-ordering sense of purpose and suggests ways to manage difficulties and capitalize on opportunities.

At the reception, study groups who "road-tested" early drafts of the book will offer an amusing, informative program. Books will be available for purchase, and Eschenfelder will sign copies.

The reception is free, and all are welcome. Call 867-1000.

The program is free and open to the public. REI is in the El Paseo de Saratoga shopping center.

Booth spaces for artisans are available for $80 or $100, depending on the size. Powwow proceeds benefit the West Valley-Mission College American Indian Scholarship Fund. For more information, call Steve Worley at 741-2530.

Hakone Gardens plans a waltz through Old Vienna

The Hakone Foundation invites all interested members of the community to attend "A Waltz Through Old Vienna" on Sept. 18 at Hakone Gardens, 21000 Big Basin Way in Saratoga.

The event begins at 3 p.m. with wine tasting, courtesy of Saratoga's Cooper Garrod Winery. At 5 p.m., the San Francisco Lamplighters, decked out in period costume, will perform operatic selections from Die Fledermaus, The Merry Widow and Countess Maritza.

Dinner is served at 6 p.m., with guests seated at one of 24 tables, each with a distinct theme such as bamboo, flowers, Italian, Japanese, leaves, Mexican, Mother Goose, nautical, train travel, wine and the San Francisco 49ers.

Honorary chairman of the event is Kiyoshi Yasui, an internationally known traditional Japanese architect and an adviser to Hakone Gardens. Tickets are $75 each, $50 of which is tax-deductible. Reservations are required, and seating is limited. For more information, call Nancy Lesser at 354-1820.
