Ralph and Faith Schmidt of Saratoga announce the engagement of their son, Gary Kirk Schmidt, to Maria Angela Lopez of Orland, Calif. The couple plan to be married Oct. 13 in Walnut Creek.

The bride to be, the daughter Jose Lopez and Roselia Medina of Orland, is a 1991 graduate of Orland High School and a 1995 graduate of UC-Berkeley, where she earned a bachelor's degree in psychology. She is employed as a laboratory assistant with the UC-Berkeley Division of Biological Control.

Schmidt, a 1988 graduate of Saratoga High School, obtained a bachelor's degree in science and engineering physics from UC-Berkeley in 1993, where he was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. He is a software engineer with Matrix Integrated Systems Inc. in Richmond.
