Pollution Prevention Week cleans up at Saratoga Creek
The Saratoga Creek will get some attention this Sat., Sept. 21, from 9 a.m. to noon. As part of Pollution Prevention Week, the Saratoga Creek has been slated as one site for the 12th annual Coastal Cleanup Day.
"Basically, [volunteers are] going to go out and clean up the creek," Kelly Carroll, a program director with the West Valley Cities Pollution Prevention Program, said. Carroll said volunteers should wear sturdy shoes and clothes that can get dirty. She said refreshments will be available, and a limited number of volunteers will receive T-shirts for their efforts. "It's usually a lot of fun," said Carroll.
Those interested in volunteering for the statewide cleanup effort must register in advance by calling 730-7716.
Saturday is also Tire Amnesty Day. Residents can recycle old tires free of charge from 9 a.m. until noon. The drop-off center will be at George Mayne Elementary School in San Jose. For more information, call the Environmental Services Department at 277-2700.
Deadline extended for applications
The Saratoga City Council is still seeking interested citizens to fill one vacancy on the Parks and Recreation Commission. The deadline for applications has been extended to Oct. 4.
The Parks and Recreation Commission consists of seven members and meets on the first Monday of each month at 7:30 p.m. It considers issues concerning all aspects of city recreation and parks. Persons with experience or interest in recreation or parks, including those with young children, are encouraged to apply.
Any resident of Saratoga age 18 or older who is interested in serving on the commission may obtain an application at City Hall, 13777 Fruitvale Ave., between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Applicants who have never attended a Parks and Recreation Commission meeting will be asked to attend a meeting on Oct. 7. All applicants will be interviewed by members of the City Council in October. For information, call the Deputy City Clerk at 867-3438.
