    Cupertino will host trail meet

The final public meeting on the proposed Union Pacific Railroad trail, an 8.7-mile route through four West Valley cities, will be held on Sept. 27 at the Cupertino Senior Center at 21251 Stevens Creek Blvd. At the meeting, scheduled to start at 7 p.m., transportation consultants will gather public input for the last time before meeting with county agencies in October.

The proposed trail runs on the Union Pacific Rail Corridor through Los Gatos, Campbell, Cupertino and Saratoga. Transportation consultants have been meeting with representatives of Union Pacific over the last several weeks in an attempt to get the company's approval of the trail.

Public meetings specific to individual cities were held in early summer. For more information about the trail and the up coming meeting, call Diane Arrants at the city of Cupertino at 408.777.3245.

    Local firefighters battle Sierra blaze

Hours before news broke of the attacks on New York and Washington Sept. 11, a squad of four Saratoga firefighters and one Saratoga engine were called to help fight a wildfire blaze in Calaveras County.

Fire Chief Ernie Kraule said the call came in at around 4 a.m. Sept. 11, as part of a statewide contingency network. The Saratoga team was assigned to defend a home in a rural community surrounding the fire, located two miles southwest of the town of Hathaway Pines.

As of Sept. 14, the fire had burned 13,900 acres but state authorities estimated that they would have the fire totally contained by evening on Sept 17.
