Violet Miljevich
Former Saratogan Violet Miljevich died in her San Jose home on Aug. 17, at the age of 75.
Born June 13, 1925, in Cupertino, Miljevich was a member of the Serbian Club Omladina and a benefactor of Saint Michael the Archangel Serbian Eastern Orthodox Church of Saratoga. She was also a member of Naperdak Corporation.
Miljevich and her family lived in the Saratoga area for more than 75 years and have a street named after them.
She was preceded in death by her husband Chris Miljevich. Survivors include children Theodore and Christine Miljevich of San Jose; brother Pete Sulaver; and many nieces and nephews.
Albert van Wichen
Albert Govert van Wichen of Saratoga died of heart failure on Aug. 22, at Kaiser Hospital, Santa Clara. He was 96.
Born April 1, 1904, in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, van Wichen settled in the United States in 1959. During World War II, he worked with the resistance movement during Holland's German occupation and helped provide sanctuary to many fugitives, at the risk of his own life.
A teacher and linguist for nearly 50 years, van Wichen loved gardening and walking.
Survivors include wife Zara van Wichen of Saratoga; daughter Marilyn Cargill of San Jose; son Martin van Wichen of San Jose; and grandsons Peter and Jared van Wichen, also of San Jose.
Memorial services have been held, with interment at Madronia Cemetery.
