Holiday fundraiser raises money to benefit homeless
Realtors from Saratoga, Los Gatos, Cupertino, Sunnyvale and Santa Clara have joined forces to fight homelessness in the South Bay by holding the third annual Home for the Holidays fundraiser on Sept. 28, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Sacred Heart Church, 13724 Saratoga Ave. Home for the Holidays is a benefit for the Housing Industry Foundation, a nonprofit organization that helps underprivileged families find--or keep--housing and avoid homelessness. The event includes a gourmet array of hors d'oeuvres prepared by local restaurants, live music, dancing, a raffle and an auction.
Admission is $30 per person, which includes three raffle tickets. For more information, call Robert Reid at 408.996.7040, or Debra Patterson at 408.451.7950.
Rec. Department plans day trip to North Bay island
The Saratoga Recreation Department is taking reservations for a trip to the East Brother Light Station, a lighthouse that has stood a few miles north of the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge since 1873. Part of it has now been refurbished into a bed-and-breakfast inn. The day trip includes a bus ride to Sausalito, a sail to the island on the Avalon, a deli lunch and a guided tour of the historic lighthouse building. Once back in Sausalito, participants will have a chance to shop in the quaint downtown.
Comfortable walking shoes are recommended. Adults of all ages are welcome to attend. Cost is $109 per person. Space is limited; call 408.868.1248, or 408.868.1249 for reservations.
Outdoorsman to tell of adventures during free event
As part of its ongoing series of community lectures and programs, REI Saratoga has invited rock climber and white-water kayaker Royal Robbins to give a slide show and talk on his 40 years of outdoor adventures. This includes the routes he pioneered up Yosemite's Half Dome and El Capitan, as well as his first descents of the headwaters of the San Joaquin, Kern and Kings rivers.
REI is in the El Paseo de Saratoga shopping center.
