Hall of fame honors local authors
Friends of the Saratoga Library highlight talent at the Book-Go-Round
By Shari Kaplan
As a showcase to the time and talent expended by local writers both past and present, the Friends of the Saratoga Library is staging its annual Saratoga Authors Hall of Fame, through Oct. 3 at the Book-Go-Round, 14410 Oak St.
The FSL ran the exhibit, a community tradition since 1992, out of the Saratoga Community Library as part of Celebrate! Saratoga for many years. This year, due to space restrictions, the exhibit has been moved to the Book-Go-Round, the cozy building from which FSL volunteers sell donated paperback and hardback books as well as books-on-tape, videotapes, records, cassettes and compact discs. FSL uses proceeds to purchase various items for the Saratoga Community Library, such as furnishings, art, display cases and plants.
According to Mary Jeanne Fenn, the Book-Go-Round's manager for the past 13 years, this year's Authors Hall of Fame features more than 100 writers, all of whom are either current or former Saratogans. Many of their books are on display, from the dusty relics to the newly published. The ratio of men to women is just about equal.
A broad spectrum of genres and topics is represented, including archaeology, biography, California history, children's stories, computers, cooking, education, fiction, finance, folk tales, genealogy, humor, law, local history, military history, mystery, philosophy, photography, poetry, psychology, religion, sports and women's issues.
The Book-Go-Round is open Sunday through Friday from noon to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, call 867-5552 or send email to BookGoRnd@aol.com. Anyone interested in being part of next year's Authors Hall of Fame, or who knows someone who should be recognized, can call the Book-Go-Round or Dolly Barnes at the Saratoga Library, 867-6127.
