Saratoga NewsLettersViews are one thing, funds are another After filing my candidacy for Saratoga City Council, I received a flurry of letters from organizations requesting information about my views on various topics. The stated purpose of these letters was to evaluate my positions on those topics with respect to the goals of the organization. If we had similar views, the organization might then endorse my candidacy and perhaps give funds to my campaign. While I will be happy to receive en-dorsements from any organization that shares my views, my campaign is solely funded by contributions from individual Saratogans. I pledge to represent Saratogans, not moneyed interests from outside our community, and will not be beholden to special-interest groups or PACs.
John Mehaffey Thanks, not complaints, should be offered now I am writing in regard to Saratoga Federated's decision to discontinue Mom's Day Out. I think it is wonderful that this church offered such a service to the community for so many years. I took advantage of a similar program at my church when my children were young. Unfortunately, that program was discontinued for similar reasons, a staff in transition. While I missed the convenience of this service, I could not imagine complaining about this decision to anyone, especially the community newspaper. A church has to continually make decisions about what programs to support with its limited resources of staff and money. Starting such a program does not mean a lifetime commitment to sustaining it. That would be like having a Christmas party one year, and having everyone expect you to have such a party every year for the rest of your life. I think a more appropriate response is a gracious "thank you" for such hospitality, with no expectations for the future.
