Theo the Dog garners 2nd in singing contest

Theo, the Saratoga hound who became a finalist in the Advantage Search for North America's Best Singing Pet, howled his way to second place Sept. 16--finishing behind a Canadian poodle and her opera-singing owner.

Theo and owners Charlie and Jennifer Robert were on hand in New York City's Times Square for the sing-off last week. The crooning canine competed against 10 other United States dogs and against two finalists from Canada, including the grand-prize winner.

Second place or no second place, the black and white pointer/pit bull mix did get his 15 minutes of fame, making an appearance on both the Regis and Kathie Lee Show on Friday, Sept. 11 and the Today Show on Monday, Sept. 14. Theo's Regis and Kathie Lee performance was bumped off the air on the West Coast by a special news bulletin regarding the release of the Kenneth Starr grand jury report, but the 4-year-old was able to howl "Happy Birthday" in the window of the Today Show without interruption.

"Well, you could still say Theo is the best singing pet in the U.S.," one Advantage official said, pointing out that the Saratoga dog did place ahead of all the other U.S. pets.

The event was the second such contest sponsored by Advantage, a flea-control product made by the Bayer Corporation's animal health group.

Registrar in need of poll workers

The Santa Clara County Registrar of Voters is looking for workers for the upcoming general election on Nov. 3. The Registrar is recruiting residents to staff the more than 1,000 polling stations that will set up throughout Santa Clara County. About 4,400 poll workers will be needed to work those locations, and the election is only six weeks away.

Registrar officials said that bilingual workers who are fluent in Spanish, Vietnamese or Chinese are critically needed.

Poll workers must be 18 years of age or older, county residents and U.S. citizens, and will be paid between $60 and $95. No experience is necessary, and training will be provided at several locations and times throughout the county. For more information about being a poll worker, call the Registrar of Voters at 299-2694.
