Saratoga NewsObituaryJane Campbell Longtime Saratoga resident Jane Woodworth Campbell died July 20 at the age of 88. Born in Stratford, Calif., on Nov. 4, 1909, Campbell came to Saratoga in 1935. She earned a bachelor's degree and teaching credential as well as a master's degree in guidance and a secondary credential from San Jose State University. Along with teaching at Edison High School in San Jose from 1960 to 1971, she worked to establish a Babe Ruth baseball team for Saratoga and Los Gatos, a Saratoga Pony League baseball team and a pee-wee softball team for Saratoga to enter in the Los Gatos Recreation League in the early 1950s. Campbell and her husband, Virgil, owned and operated Campbell's Market in Saratoga for many years and in three different locations, all within a short radius of the intersection where Saratoga Avenue, Los Gatos-Saratoga Road and Big Basin Way meet. She was active in numerous organizations, including the Saratoga Foothill Club, Saratoga Chamber of Commerce, Saratoga Federated Church, Los Gatos Eastern Star, Friends of Saratoga Libraries, the Saratoga-Los Gatos branch of AAUW and the PTA of Los Gatos High School, from which her sons graduated. Survivors include her husband of 64 years, Virgil Campbell; sons and daughters-in-law John and Bobby Campbell of San Jose and Hugh and Louise Campbell of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada; grandchildren Steve, Rick and Greig Campbell, Patty Lummis, Kris Cummings, Robin Boake and Jill and Molly Campbell; great-grandchildren Brian, Brandon, Lauren, Sarah, Jenny, James, Max and Chloe Jane. Memorial services have been held.
