Saratoga NewsOn CampusExchange students need host families The American Intercultural Student Exchange is seeking host families for foreign exchange high school students during the 1998-'99 school year. Exchange students stay with host families during the school year and attend local high schools during their 10-month stay. SEF announces new president for 1998-99 Karen Azzi is the Saratoga Education Foundation's new president for the 1998-99 school year. Azzi, an SEF board member since 1995, was most recently the foundation's vice president of school programs. During her time with SEF, Azzi has initiated a new fundraising program called Car Sales and has chaired Gift Wrap and the Phone-a-thon fundraising events. The mother of four children, she takes over the reins of SEF from Stephanie Weidert. Saratogans win big in 4-H at two fairs Rachel and Aaron Teagle, both members of the El Sereno 4-H Club of Saratoga, recently won several awards at both the Santa Clara County Fair and the California State Fair. At the county fair last month, Rachel won beginning showmanship for dogs and placed third in novice and fifth in advanced status. She went on to win advanced showmanship in poultry and finished second in advanced cavy (guinea pig) showmanship. Rachel also won the Round Robin, which allowed her to compete at the state fair. Aaron won novice poultry showmanship and finished third in advanced. He also beat his sister by half a point to win advanced cavy showmanship. At the state fair in Sacramento, Rachel placed second in junior dog showmanship and seventh in poultry showmanship. Rachel and Aaron teamed up to place fifth in the Avian Bowl, a poultry-knowledge contest. They also placed second in the Cavy Bowl. The brother-and-sister team each had a best of breed in the cavy show, and Rachel was named Outstanding Exhibitor for Cavies. At the state fair master showman competition, Rachel won the Small Animal Round Robins. In the 14-and-under second master showman contest--for the areas of dogs, rabbits, poultry, cavies and pygmy goats--Aaron finished third and Rachel placed first. SHS honors recent grads Nearly 50 members of Saratoga High School's Class of 1998 were honored in June for maintaining at least a 4.0 GPA throughout their four years of high school. The students were presented with gold honor cords, which they wore over their gowns during graduation ceremonies. Among those honored are valedictorian Joan Cheng and the salutatorians Terry Chang, Amy Chu and David Yagol. Others with a 4.0 GPA or greater are Michelle Batra, Ori Benhamou, Trisha Bowman, Jennifer Chan, Audrey Chang, David Chao, Jennifer Chao, Paul Chen, Richard Chen, Eric Cheung, Justin Cho, Cheryl Chow, Karen Chuang, Mendel Chuang, Michael Goss, Alvina Hsu, Sherry Jenq, Robyn Katzman, David Kim, Joseph Kim, Laura Kim, Amy Lee, Kathy Lee, Jennifer Lin, Sheryl Linsky, Evalani Meyer, Andrew Miller, Amanda Posner, Stephanie Sheng, Jennifer Shih, Theodore Siegel, Matthew Siegle, Andrew Sun, Ryan Sze, Joyce Tang, Michelle Teng, Adrian Tong, Christopher Tucker, Judy Wang, Amy Wong, Mia You, and Allison Zisko.
