Saratoga NewsBehnke, Modi lead Falcons to back-to-back net winsBy Dick Sparrer Senior Camille Behnke had a pretty good week for the Saratoga girls tennis team. So did sophomore Sheetal Modi. And because of it, the Falcons are off and rolling in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League. Behnke and Modi posted two singles wins apiece to lead the Falcons to back-to-back league wins over Gunn and Monta Vista. Behnke was a 6-4, 6-3 winner at No. 1 singles in a tight 4-3 win over Monta Vista Sept. 17. Modi supported with a 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 4 singles. The two wins, coupled with a pair of doubles victories, helped the Falcons to a tight win over the Matadors. Sophomores Eileen Allen and Kate Pisani teamed for a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 1 doubles for the Falcons and senior Nancy Walker and junior Angela Yeh joined forces to a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 3 doubles. Earlier in the week, Behnke won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 to spark a Saratoga sweep in singles play. Sophomore Amanda Wise won 6-4, 7-5 at No. 2 singles and senior Angi Chua won 7-6 (11-9), 7-5 at No. 3. Modi came through with a tough 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 4 singles. Juniors Shiela Chako and Melinda Peterson got together for a 7-6 (7-3), 6-2 win at No. 2 doubles and Walker and Yeh won 6-3, 7-5 at No. 3 doubles. The two leagues wins sandwiched a 6-1 loss to powerful Robert Louis Stevenson. Allen and Pisani nailed a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 1 doubles for Saratoga's only win of the match. Jennifer Cheng won 6-2, 6-0 in a non-scoring No. 5 singles match. The Falcons, now 5-1 for the year and 2-0 in the division, had opened the year with wins over Lynbrook (5-2), Leland (6-1) and Castilleja (5-2). Three was Chua's lucky number in the nonleague competition. The senior won three times at No. 3 singles in the three matches. Allen and Pisani also posted three wins at No. 1 doubles. Saratoga will be back in league action this week, having hosted Los Gatos on Sept. 22 before visiting St. Francis at Cuesta Park in Mountain View on Sept. 24. Both matches are set to begin at 2:45 p.m.
