Saratoga NewsVillage BriefsNewspaper editor speaks at library San Jose Mercury News travel editor Zeke Wiggles-worth is the guest speaker for a free program presented by the Friends of the Saratoga Libraries on Sept. 28 at 7:30 p.m. at the Saratoga Community Library, located at 13650 Saratoga Ave. Wigglesworth writes extensively and entertainingly for the newspaper about firsthand experiences in his numerous travels throughout the country. He will share tales of people and places he has visited and offer tips for unique travel experiences. Kids can become backyard scientists The Saratoga Recreation Department has a new class this fall for children ages 7-9 called Backyard Scientists. Lydia Fox, a naturalist with more than 12 years experience in environmental education, leads children on an exploration of the natural world around them. Among the class's many activities are turning wool into yarn, studying and examining plants and animals and performing hands-on science experiments. The class meets at the Saratoga Community Center from 3:30 to 5 p.m. on eight consecutive Thursdays, beginning Oct. 1. Registration fee is $89 for Saratoga residents and $99 for non-residents. A materials fee of $12 is payable to the instructor on the first day of class. For more information, call 868-1248 or 868-1249. St. Andrews hosts an Al-Anon event Harvest of Hope, an annual event by the Santa Clara Valley Al-Anon Family Groups Intergroup, takes place Oct. 3 from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, located at 13601 Saratoga Ave. Guest speakers are three members of the same family: Bob P. discusses Alcoholics Anonymous; Jeanne P. talks about Al-Anon and Patty P. explains Alateen for young people. The event includes hugs and support, a pasta lunch, refreshments, a donation drawing, a silent auction and entertainment by the Keep It Simple Sisters. Suggested donation for tickets is $4 per person without lunch or $8 with lunch. Both prices go up one dollar if tickets are purchased at the door. For more information, call 559-7009.
