The Santa County Sheriff's Department's Teenage Community Police Academy is accepting applications from local teens. The academy will cover such topics such as traffic laws and enforcement, criminal and juvenile law, search and seizure and sexual assault.

The teen academy's first class will be held Oct. 7 from 6 p.m. to about 9 p.m. at the Sheriff's Office headquarters. Applicants must be at least 14 years old and be enrolled in high school. Students can pick up applications at the Sheriff's Office Westside Substation, at 14373 Saratoga Ave.; the Cupertino Satellite Station at Cupertino City Hall, at 10300 Torre Ave.; and Saratoga, Monta Vista and Cupertino high schools. Applications are due by Sept. 25.

City seeks calligrapher

Volunteer Saratoga is looking for residents skilled in the art of calligraphy to help the city improve awards certificates, signs and posters. City staffers say the hours are flexible and the calligraphy can be done at home for only a few hours a month. Interested residents should call Lori Burns at the city's volunteer office at 408/868-1252.

Residents honored for service to city

The Saratoga City Council commended two residents for their service to the city at last week's City Council meeting.

Wayne Dippel and Dick Brooding were thanked by Saratoga Mayor Gillian Moran for their work with the Saratoga Finance Advisory Committee and the Hakone Foundation board of directors, respectively.

Dippel served on the finance committee for more than a year, participating in the annual review and adoption of the Comprehensive Annual Financial Report and Budget and Investment Policy.

Brooding served as a member of the Foundation board of directors also for more than a year, dedicating time to the gardens and the foundation.
