Falcons fall, but not in league match

By Dick Sparrer

Dave Schirtzinger didn't want his Saratoga Falcons to lose a single girls' tennis match last week.

But if he had to pick one of the three matches Saratoga played as the one the Falcons could afford to lose, it was the midweek clash with Robert Louis Stevenson.

Saratoga sandwiched a tight 4-3 loss to RLS between wins over Monta Vista and Los Gatos. And the importance of those two matches? They came in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League.

The Falcons opened the week with a 6-1 victory over Monta Vista, then, after falling to RLS, they came back to blank rival Los Gatos 7-0.

Camille Behnke started the Falcons on the road to victory against the Matadors with a tough 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 win at No. 1 singles. Carolyn Hooper added a 7-6 (8-6), 6-3 win at No. 3 singles, and Kelly Pisani won 7-6 (8-6), 6-4 at No. 4.

Amanda Wise and Angi Chua teamed for a 6-2, 6-0 victory at No. 1 doubles. Nancy Walker and Jennifer Chao came through with a 6-1, 6-2 triumph at No. 2, and Kate Pisani and Eileen Allen won 6-3, 6-3 at No. 3.

Saratoga improved to 2-0 in league play and 4-1 for the year with the 7-0 win over Los Gatos on Thursday. Robyn Katzman was a 6-3, 6-3 winner at No. 1 singles, and Benhke won 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2. Hooper came through with a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 3, and Walker won 6-4, 6-1 at No. 4.

Chua and Wise combined for a 7-5, 6-0 victory at No. 1 doubles, and Lindsay Lightbody and Kelly Pisani joined forces for a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 2. Julie Neogy and Angela Yeh teamed for a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 3.

Behnke posted a 6-4, 6-4 victory at No. 2 singles, but that was the only singles win the Falcons could muster in the 4-3 loss to Stevenson.

Wise and Chua won 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 at No. 1 doubles, and Kate Pisani and Allen won 7-6 (7-5), 6-7 (5-7), 7-5 at No. 3.

In other local action, Prospect beat Pioneer 6-1, but lost 4-3 to Oak Grove to move to 3-1 in the Santa Teresa Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League. The Panthers are 6-1 for the year.

Westmont split a pair of matches, beating Willow Glen 5-2 but losing 6-1 to Lincoln. The Warriors are 1-3 in the West Valley Division of the BVAL.
