Saratoga NewsVillage BriefsLibrary Friends plan meeting, other activities The Friends of the Saratoga Libraries welcome the public to the Oct. 6 meeting at 10 a.m. at the Saratoga Community Library, located at 13650 Saratoga Ave. Guest speaker is Dr. Susan G. Shillinglaw, a San Jose State University English professor and director of the Martha Heasley Cox Center for Steinbeck Studies at the university. Shillinglaw will share little-known anecdotes about John Steinbeck's life and works. The FSL semiannual Rare Book Auction runs from Sept. 24 through Oct. 5 at Book-Go-Round, located at 14410 Oak St. Buyers can make silent bids at the bookstore on many rare and collectible books. From Oct. 8 to 12, FSL holds its semi-annual fundraiser, a paperback book sale, in the Saratoga Library. All paperbacks are four for $1. Opening night hours are 6 to 9 p.m. Hours from Oct. 9 to 11 are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Clearance Day-- $2 gets buyers as many books as they can load into a bag--on Oct. 12 takes place from noon to 4 p.m. Books from the auction will be on display at the sale Oct. 8 and 9. A final verbal opportunity to bid takes place Oct. 9 at 7 p.m. in the library. Kids fish for free at Vasona County Park The Santa Clara County Parks and Recreation Department once again hosts "South Bay Fishing in the City," this time at Vasona Lake County Park in Los Gatos. From 8 a.m. to noon on Sept. 27, children accompanied by an adult with a valid driver's license may borrow rods and reels for a free fishing mini-clinic and haul in catfish, with which the lake will be stocked prior to the event. The miniclinic includes knot-tying, hook-baiting, how to rig a fishing pole and cast a line, fishing safety, fishing ethics and a basic equipment overview. Equipment is available on a first-come, first-served basis; children may also bring equipment from home. The only charge for the fishing day is $4 per vehicle entering the park, which is located along Blossom Hill Road near Roberts Road. For more information, call Rion at 354-4902.
