Moon Festival marks total lunar eclipse

Eclipse will be last visible from North America until 2000

West Valley College is staging a Moon Festival to mark the last total lunar eclipse visible from North America until 2000. At about 8 p.m. on Sept. 26, the only light hitting the moon will be the reddish glow from the earth's sunrises and sunsets, says West Valley astronomy professor Tom Bullock.

Bullock will explain the lunar-eclipse phenomenon and discuss the significance of the harvest moon. Music professor Christy Coobatis will perform celestial sounds with musicians John Hernandez of Oingo Boingo, Michael Masley from Last of the Mohicans, and Naand Rashid.

Guests may bring picnic dinners or purchase food from a caterer on site. Orion telescopes has donated a telescope which will be given away at the event. Admission is $5, $2 for students and free for children under 12. The college is located at 14000 Fruitvale Ave. Call 741-2164.
