'The Last Hurrah' comes to gallery
Gallery Saratoga, at 14531 Big Basin Way, unit 3 in Saratoga, will feature one of its longtime member artists, Los Gatan Wanda Kownacki, from Oct. 2 through Nov. 4. Kownacki's installation, "The Last Hurrah" comprises a variety of watercolor, acrylic and pastel paintings, some of which use more than one medium to create unusual effects. The exhibit's title reflects the fact that Kownacki might not be showing her paintings much anymore.
The public is invited to an artist's reception, with refreshments, on Oct. 14 from 1 to 5 p.m. Regular gallery hours are Tuesday through Sunday, 10 a.m.-6 p.m. For information, call 408.867.0458 or visit www.gallerysaratoga.com on the Internet.
West Valley to hold powwow
West Valley College, at 14000 Fruitvale Ave. in Saratoga, is gearing up for its 13th annual powwow, which takes place Oct. 6 from noon to midnight. The event includes traditional Native American songs, dances, drumming demonstrations, arts, crafts, food and drinks.
The powwow tradition, which dates back to the 19th century, originates from an Algonquin term for "conjurer." Powwows were held by Native American tribes to cure disease and to ensure success in an upcoming battle or hunt.
Admission is free. Booths for artisans or vendors are available at $100 or $120, depending on booth size. Powwow proceeds benefit the West Valley-Mission College American Indian Scholarship Fund. Call 408.741.2530 for more information.
