Forums are on the agenda for candidates and issues

    By Nathan R. Huff

To help the public make informed decisions this November, the Los Gatos-Saratoga-Monte Sereno chapter of the League of Women Voters (LWV) is holding a series of candidate debates and "Pros and Cons on the Initiatives" meetings.

The League of Women Voters is one of a small handful of groups that provides nonpartisan information on election races and ballot initiatives. The LWV also takes positions on issues, but does not include its stance in its informational literature.

Initiatives on the Nov. 7 ballot include expansions of school voucher programs, a veteran's bond act, a new drug treatment diversification program and campaign finance reform measures, among others.

The LWV series on the eight state propositions that will appear on the upcoming ballot begins on Sept. 27, at the Saratoga Senior Center. Located across from West Valley College, the center will be the venue for the forum which runs from 1:30 to 3 p.m.

The American Association of University Women (AAUW) will join forces with the LWV at the Saratoga Library for another "Pros and Cons" forum on Oct. 4. The joint meeting will run from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m.

On Oct. 11, at 1:30 p.m., another forum will take place at the Los Gatos-Saratoga Neighborhood Center. The center is located at 208 E. Main Street in Los Gatos.

Upcoming candidate forums include an Oct. 5 event with the three Saratoga candidates currently vying for two city council seats. The forum begins at 7:30 p.m., at Saratoga High School on Saratoga-Sunnyvale Road.
