Masiello an MVP
Betsy Masiello, a 1998 graduate of Saratoga High, helped Wellesley College to a field hockey title in the Seven Sisters Tournament. Masiello, a sophomore, was named the tourney's most valuable player after leading Wellesley to a 3-2 overtime win over Swarthmore in the title match. Swarthmore had been ranked No. 7 in the nation.
NJB Registration
The National Junior Basketball (NJB) of Saratoga will hold registration for the 2000 season on Oct. 1, noon-2 p.m., at the Saratoga High School gym.
NJB offers a competitive basketball league for boys and girls in the third-through eighth-grades. There is also an instructional clinic program for second-graders.
The registration fee is $150 for players in grades 3-8, $75 for the second-grade clinic. Additionally, families are expected to volunteer their time for contribute a $50 buyout. Each player must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at the registration, present a birth certificate and provide proof of residency (PG&E bill).
Registration is a first-come, first-served basis, and players must reside in Saratoga or the Saratoga Union School District.
Those interested in gaining priority registration can send a fax to 408.354.1723 to request one of the following positions in the league: head coach (assistant coaches will not receive priority), clinic program helpers, gym opening coordinator, gym closing coordinator, NJB website development and administration, NJB high school nights coordinator, post-season coordinator, T-shirt sales coordinator or player evaluation day coordinator. Those not receiving confirmation of a priority job must come to the general registration on Oct. 1.
Baseball Showcase
High school baseball players in the greater San Jose area interested in playing at the collegiate level will get the opportunity to display their talents on Oct. 15 with the Baseball Factory hosts a day-long showcase event at San Jose Municipal Stadium.
The event draws college coaches from throughout the area and professional scouts. The deadline for application is Oct. 8. For more information, call 1.800.641.HITS.
