San Jose Wind Symphony is at West Valley College
The San Jose Wind Symphony presents a program of international music on Sept. 30, at 3 p.m. at West Valley College, 14000 Fruitvale Ave. in Saratoga. The guest conductor for the afternoon is Col. Arnold Gabriel, a retired commander of the U.S. Air Force Band. One of the world's most widely traveled musicians, Col. Gabriel has conducted ensembles in all 50 of the United States, as well as in 48 countries throughout the world.
The program consists of La Forza del Destino Overture by Verdi, Lake and Kent; Washington Greys by Grafulla; Lassus Trombone by Fillmore; Buglers' Holiday by Anderson and Mills; Toccata by Frescobaldi and Slocum; Russian Christmas Music by Reed; Light Cavalry Overture by Suppe and Fillmore; Second Suite in F for Band (a four-part composition) by Holst; Slavonic Rhapsody by Freidmann and Lake; and An Ellington Portrait by Werle and Mills.
The San Jose Wind Symphony was founded by conductor Darrell Johnston in September 1958. It is a nonprofit, self-supporting organization that is funded through its dues, ticket sales, grants and individual and corporate donations. Its mission is to promote the concept of a wind ensemble by presenting concerts in a variety of settings; providing opportunities for individual musical expression and growth; and assisting in music education through concerts, clinics, festivals and scholarships.
Admission is $15 for adults and $12 for students and senior citizens. Series packages and group and family rates are also available. For more information, call 408.927.SJWS, or visit www.sjws.org on the Internet.
