Poetry contest deadline nears
Aspiring poets have just a few more days to turn in submissions for Villa Montalvo's Biennial Poetry Competition and a chance to win an artist residency position or one of 11 cash prizes.
The competition, whose entries must be postmarked by Oct. 1, is open to all forms of poetry written in English by residents of California, Nevada, Oregon and Washington. Poets may submit three poems along with a $10 fee for each entry.
This year's judge is Denise Duhamel, author of 10 books and chapbooks of poetry, including her most recent title, The Star-Spangled Banner, as well as Exquisite Politics, Kinky and How the Sky Fell. She also has been widely anthologized.
First prize is $1,000 and a month in one of Villa Montalvo's furnished artist residency cottages, nestled at the base of the Santa Cruz Mountains. Second prize is $500; third prize is $300; eight honorable mentions will each receive $25. All winners will be honored in an awards ceremony and reading at Montalvo on Jan. 16, 2000.
Entry guidelines may be obtained by calling Kathryn Funk, 408.961.5818, or by emailing kfunk@villamontalvo.org.
