Bay Area author gives talk at the Saratoga Library
Native San Franciscan Gail Tsukiyama, author of The Samurai's Dream, Women of the Silk and Night of Many Dreams, speaks at the Saratoga Community Library, 13650 Saratoga Ave., on Sept. 29 at 7 p.m. The program is free and everyone is welcome. The San Francisco State University professor's personal history incorporates both Chinese and Japanese culture, which she also weaves into her stories. Her newest novel is due out later this fall.
Sanborn Park is the site for YSI night hike
An autumn night hike at Sanborn County Park in Saratoga is scheduled for Oct. 16 from 7:30 to 9 p.m. The hike, open to adults, teenagers and children, begins at the Youth Science Institute's Sanborn Nature Center. Sanborn manager Patricia Kucker leads participants through the evening woods and teaches them to use their senses in identifying nocturnal animals. Owls, raccoons, bats, opossums and deer are among the creatures that may make an appearance. Children under 10 must be accompanied by an adult.
The nonprofit YSI provides science education classes, hikes and day camps to develop children's understanding of and appreciation for the interrelationship between humans and the natural world. Night hikes fill up fast; for fees or reservations, call 408.867.6940.
Church plans trip to view Assisi exhibit
Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 13724 Saratoga Ave., has organized an evening at the Legion of Honor Museum in San Francisco on Oct. 15 to view a traveling exhibition of nearly 70 medieval and Renaissance paintings, sculptures, goldsmiths' work, textiles and illuminated manuscripts from the Basilica of St. Francis in Assisi, Italy. An additional 30 items come from museums and private collections in Europe and the United States. The evening includes refreshments, live entertainment and access to the museum's other galleries. Tickets are $50 per person, not including transportation. For an additional $15, participants can take a chartered bus at the church. Call 408.867.3634 for reservations.
