Daniels, Shoor lead Falcons to second

Saratoga has been hot on heels of the Wildcats

By Dick Sparrer

Don't be surprised to see Saratoga cross-country coach Marshall Clark smiling just a bit if Los Gatos grabs place in the top five when the state Division III rankings come out this week.

It's not that Clark will be especially happy for the Wildcats. After all, there's no real love lost between Los Gatos and Saratoga.

No, it's just that the Falcons have been hot on the heels on the Wildcats all season. And if the Cats are among the state's best teams, the Falcons can't be far behind.

They certainly weren't last week at the Central Park Invitational in Santa Clara. Los Gatos won the team title, but the Falcons were close behind. The Cats ran up 50 points to win the crown, with Saratoga second at 61.

"This was one of Saratoga's best team efforts ever," said Clark.

Alex Daniels beat all the Los Gatos runners to the finish line by finishing fourth overall for the Falcons. Daniels covered the 2.3-mile course in 12:11. Alex Shoor also claimed a spot in the top 10, finishing ninth in 12:32. The times were the best ever recorded by Saratoga runners on the course.

Jeff Beyers was 14th in 12:58, with Jake Christopherson 16th in 13:01, Luke Anderson 18th in 13:04 and Nobuaki Tomine 29th in 13:31 to help the Falcons clinch the team second.

In girls action, Anne Ricketts ran 14:25 to finish third overall in a rugged field at Central Park. Laura Lin was 43rd in 16:39, with Jenny Yoo 49th in 16:53 and Dernie Wang 50th in 16:55.

Ian Hoare was 12th in 13:51 with Richard La 13th in 13:52 to lead the Saratoga boys frosh-soph team to third behind Los Gatos and Gunn. David La was 17th in 13:54, with Michael Teng 24th in 14:11.

David Lin was 10th in 14:34 to spark the Falcons to a second-place finish behind Los Gatos in the boys' junior varsity division. David Yin was 12th in 14:36, with Kevin Higgins 13th in 14:37, Devon Lui 14th in 14:38, Clarence Tam 17th in 14:44 and Ian Kolb 19th in 14:47.

Carol Liu was 13th in 17:14, and Miranda Sun was 19th in 17:38 to bring home medals for the Saratoga girls' junior varsity.
