Volunteers, others should get thanks

From the moment I announced my resignation as the first and only executive director of the Saratoga Area Senior Coordinating Council after serving nearly 16 years, I received many warm greetings and compliments on my tenure in helping SASCC grow and achieve recognition as a social force in the community. There were many tributes at the gala reception in my honor July 17, including a City Council proclamation and the mayor's presentation of the "keys to the city." Thank you all, indeed!

However, I must clearly state that many of these tributes should be directed to the visionary founding members of the SASCC, and the citizens of Saratoga, the community service organizations, local churches and the many businesses that have readily responded over the years to assist and offer support--both professionally and monetarily--when approached.

Volunteers are the cornerstone of SASCC; they dedicate more than 10,000 hours annually as board and committee members, information sources and adjuncts for numerous tasks to keep programs moving forward.

The city deserves much credit for supporting the development of SASCC over the years, with cooperation and mutual benefit through several city councils and management staff.

As SASCC nears its 20th anniversary, there is much to be done to improve services and programs. Hopefully, support and interest will continue the momentum, and activities will attract many new friends, sometimes reluctant to be identified as seniors. I am pleased I could help this community with my role.
