Saratoga NewsVillage BriefsLocal artist exhibits at Gallery Saratoga Through Nov. 8, Gallery Saratoga's featured artist is Los Gatan Wanda Kownacki. Her exhibit, titled The Best Years of My Life, features mixed-media paintings, many based on her travel experiences. Kownacki--a native of Russia raised and educated in Poland--and her college professor husband lived in various countries throughout the world before settling in Los Gatos. A reception for the artist takes place Oct. 10 from 1 to 5 p.m. at the gallery, located at 14531 Big Basin Way, Unit 3. Hours are Tuesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Safety is focus of awareness day On Oct. 3 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., parents and children are invited to Child Awareness Day at Fidelity National Title Company in Saratoga, which is also the sponsor of the event. The offices are located at 12295 Saratoga-Sunnyvale Road. The day includes demonstrations of KidAlert, a new product that helps parents keep track of their children; a fire truck and fire safety tips by the Saratoga Fire Department; free child IDs provided by the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Department; and other information and resources about child safety and protection. Games, prizes, a clown, the San Jose Sharksmobile and free hot dogs, lemonade, balloons and stickers are part of the fun. For information, call 873-3434. Soirée Musicale to play free concert A free evening of chamber music is on tap Oct. 2 at 7:45 p.m., when Soirée Musicale performs at Westhope Presbyterian Church, located at 12850 Saratoga Ave. Pianist Josephine Alvarado accompanies soprano Kasuko Hara Mockett in Spanish folk songs by Manuel de Falla. Alvarado also performs piano music of Granados and Albeniz. The program concludes with Brahms' Sonata No. 3 in D Minor Op. 108, played by violinist Debbie Dare and pianist William Horne. A reception follows; those attending are asked to contribute finger foods, a non-alcoholic beverage or a donation. Children are welcome. Soirée Musicale, a San Jose-based group devoted to the performance of chamber music, has offered free concerts featuring Bay Area musicians since 1975.
