Aegis Gallery exhibit goes under the sea

Through October 26, the Aegis Gallery of Fine Art, located at 14531 Big Basin Way in Saratoga, presents "The Hidden World of the Sea," an exhibit of underwater photography by husband-and-wife team Bruce and Lynn Bowen.

The Bowens' work has been published in several magazines and won awards in local and international photography contests. They use professional-quality underwater cameras and underwater strobe lights.

A reception for the artists takes place Oct. 4, 6:30-10 p.m. Regular gallery hours are 11 a.m.-7 p.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday and Sunday; and 11 a.m.-9 p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. For more information, call 867-0171.

Russian Festival features food, dancing and gifts

St. Nicholas Orthodox Church holds its 45th annual Russian Festival October 11-12 on the church grounds, located at 14220 Elva Ave. in Saratoga. Among the highlights are live music, Russian dancing, a costume contest, a special area for kids and a variety of Russian antiques, gift items and handicrafts for purchase. Traditional Russian foods are available from the "Babushka's Kitchen" area.

Suggested donations for admission are $3 for adults and $2 for students and senior citizens. Children 12 and younger are admitted free. Free parking is available behind Saratoga High School. For more information, call 867-0628.

Library Friends plan meeting, other activities

The Friends of the Saratoga Libraries welcome the public to the Oct. 6 meeting at 10 a.m. at the Saratoga Community Library, located at 13650 Saratoga Ave. Guest speaker is Dr. Susan G. Shillinglaw, a San Jose State University English professor and director of the Martha Heasley Cox Center for Steinbeck Studies at the university. Shillinglaw will share little-known anecdotes about John Steinbeck's life and works.

The FSL semiannual Rare Book Auction runs through October 5 at Book-Go-Round, located at 14410 Oak St. Buyers can make silent bids at the bookstore on many rare and collectible books.
