Vikings swamp Sierra

Chris Spencer (Lynbrook) tossed in eight goals and Mark von Behren, Lance Campbell (Los Gatos) and Chris Vera added three each to lead the West Valley Community College men's water polo team to a lopsided 23-7 win over Sierra in Coast Conference play last week.

In nonconference action, the West Valley women's water polo team dropped a tight 17-16 nod to Sierra.

Vikings rank 14th

In De Anza Division action, Lynbrook suffered a 15-12, 15-5, 15-5 loss to Los Gatos to open the league season, then took off to Las Vegas for the Durango Fall Classic.

The Vikings beat Cheyenne 15-13, 15-11 to advance the tournament's 13th-place match, but Lynbrook lost 15-11, 15-9 to Berkeley.

Saratoga, meanwhile, lost a couple of five-game heartbreakers to open the El Camino Division season.

The Falcons lost 15-1, 15-2, 14-16, 8-15, 15-8 to Milpitas before falling 13-15, 15-8, 15-7, 11-15, 15-12. Saratoga is 0-2 in the division and 3-8 for the year.

Prospect opened the year with two straight wins in the Santa Teresa Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League.

The Panthers pounded Gunderson 15-2, 15-6, 15-2 and they whipped Silver Creek 15-6, 15-10, 15-10. Prospect is 2-0 in league play and 5-3 overall.

Westmont dropped a tough Santa Teresa decision to Independence, falling 16-14, 5-15, 15-11, 13-15, 15-11. The Warriors are 0-1 in league play and 6-7 for the year.

Junior Basketball

NJB Saratoga is holding sign-ups for the 1996-97 youth basketball season.

The league season runs from Dec. 1 through March 9 for players in grades 3-8, and the registration fee is $100 per player. The fee is $10 for players in grades 1-2 for a season that runs Jan. 5-Feb. 9.

League play is open to boys and girls, and the league's home court is at Saratoga High School.

Space in the league is limited, and registration will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. For more information, call Matt Crosby at 867-3619.
