Saratoga doctor to begin trial on charges brought by inmate
By Oakley Brooks
Dr. Robert Bowman, 66, is scheduled to be tried later this month on sexual misconduct charges stemming from medical examinations at a correctional facility for women in the San Joaquin Valley.
The trial was scheduled to begin Oct 2, but Bowman's attorney obtained a postponement of the trial date because of added testimony from one of the case's witnesses, according to Madera County Supervising Deputy District Attorney Gina Barsotti.
When the trial begins, Barsotti, the prosecuting attorney, will attempt to prove that Bowman, who lives in Saratoga, sexually molested inmate Lisa Williams at the Central California Women's Facility in Chowchilla between October 1999 and March 2000.
He's also charged with sexual misconduct involving two other patients at the Chowchilla facility.
Barsotti said last week that she expected the trial, which will take place in Madera County, to last between two and three weeks. She wouldn't comment on any other details of the case.
Bowman, a practicing physician for more than 40 years, has repeatedly denied the charges. After he was formally charged in July 2000, he was released on his own recognizance.
He has been suspended from work at the Central California Women's Facility and in Santa Clara Valley Medical Center's Adult Custody Health Services, which administers to prisoners in Santa Clara County.
Additionally, the California Medical Board has placed restrictions on Bowman's license. He must treat female patients with a third party present and cannot conduct inspections or treatment of females' intimate body areas.
Bowman's attorney, Robert Wilkinson of Fresno, said last spring that Bowman had never faced criminal charges during his medical career.
A civil suit brought against Bowman by Lisa Williams in March has been postponed by agreement of lawyers representing both sides, said one of Williams' attorneys, Michael Bien of Rosen, Bien and Asaro in San Francisco.
Bien said last week that the legal team handling Williams' civil case--which includes attorneys from the San Quentin-based Prison Law Office--wants to see the criminal proceedings come to a close before they pursue damages for Williams.
Bien added that he's seen no intimations from Bowman's attorney of a settlement between Bowman and Williams.
Wilkinson has successfully moved for a change in venue for the civil proceedings, from the Bay Area to the Central Valley.
Wilkinson was not available to comment on either case last week.
