Saratoga student wins merit award
Oaz Nir, a Saratogan who graduated from Monta Vista High School in June, was one of 15 students to win an Angier B. Duke Memorial Scholarship from Duke University, in Durham, N.C. Nir will attend the university this fall.
The awards, given to students who show promise of being intellectual leaders, cover full tuition for four years. Scholarship winners may spend one year abroad in a university-approved program. The awards also include a six-week study program in Oxford, England. Duke University estimates each scholarship to be worth more than $100,000 over a four-year period.
Nir, son of Dr. Israel and Dalia Nir, and the other winners were chosen from among 41 finalists. Nir received gold and silver medals in the 2000 and 2001 International Math Olympiads, and guest-lectured in math classes at UC-Berkeley and Stanford University. He played on the varsity water polo team at Monta Vista and wants to study math and psychology at Duke.
Benjamin Newton Duke, one of the founders of Duke University, established Angier B. Duke Memorial Inc. in 1925, in memory of his son, Angier Buchanan Duke.
