City council approves more traffic officers
Saratogans had better continue to watch their speedometers. The city council agreed to continue funding two additional traffic patrol officers for the 2001-2002 fiscal year at the Sept. 19 council meeting.
The council approved a resolution in November 2000 to double the number of traffic officers who patrol during commute hours. The public safety commission asked the council to issue the resolution to address residents' complaints about traffic.
Since the council approved the resolution, two deputies have been patrolling Saratoga in patrol cars, while two others have patrolled the city on motorcycles.
Capt. Dennis Bacon of the Sheriff's Westside Substation cited a decrease in accidents, increase in warnings and tickets and improved back-up assistance as reasons to keep four traffic officers on duty. He added that there have been no fatal accidents since November 2000 and that speed caused a smaller percentage of collisions in 2000-2001 than it did in 1999-2000.
Mayor John Mehaffey agreed that four officers made a difference. Mehaffey said, however, that some residents would prefer that officers focus on being more visible to encourage compliance with the law, rather than "lurking to catch" violators.
According to Mehaffey, City Manager Dave Anderson suggested that one officer focus more on community-oriented activities such as monitoring traffic and education. Bacon said the sheriff's office was going in that direction.
Vice Mayor Nick Streit expressed concern over traffic around schools, saying it was "horrendous" at times and was no better than last year. He said someone was going to get killed, with parents dropping their children off on the both sides of the street near Marshall Lane Elementary School.
City officials project they will spend $2,900,416 on law enforcement services in 2001-2002. The amount includes the two additional traffic officers.
