Art group hosts local artist
The Saratoga Contemporary Artists invites all interested members of the community to attend its Oct. 11 meeting, at which time award-winning artist Mary Bielinski Wyatt will give a demonstration on watercolor, her favorite medium. Wyatt, who teaches at West Valley and Mission Colleges, has traveled extensively for subject matter. Among her favorite locales are the California coast, Yosemite, Hawaii and old missions. She is known for her motto: "never stop learning."
The meeting takes place at the Saratoga Library, 13650 Saratoga Ave., and is free of charge. Refreshments will be served. The SCA is a community organization that promotes the arts and lets artists of different levels and styles socialize, network, review each others' works and occasionally paint together. YSI plans night hike in park
The Youth Science Institute's first Night Hike of autumn takes place Oct. 14, from 7:30 to 9 p.m. at Sanborn-Skyline County Park in Saratoga. The hike, open to all ages, begins at the YSI's Nature Center, at 16055 Sanborn Road. Lead by Nature Center manager Patricia Kucker, the hike takes participants through the evening woods and teaches them to use their senses to spot and identify nocturnal animals. Children under 10 must be accompanied by an adult. Cost is $5 per person.

Rec. Department plans a day trip
The Saratoga Recreation Department is taking reservations for a trip to the Golden Gate National Recreation Area on Nov. 2, from 8:15 a.m. to 5 p.m. In the morning, tour participants will visit the Marine Mammal Center of the Marin Headlands, a facility that rescues marine mammals along the California coast. Next is a hosted lunch at the Cliff House Restaurant with choice of entree. The day concludes with a docent-led tour of the Presidio, including the Main Post, Fort Point.
Comfortable walking shoes are recommended. Adults of all ages are welcome. Cost is $69 per person. Space is limited; call 408.868.1248 or 408.868.1249 for reservations.
