Bamboo fans will converge
Bamboo enthusiasts from the United States--joined by their compeers from Central America, Europe and Asia--will convene at Saratoga's Hakone Gardens, 21000 Big Basin Way, on Oct. 15 and 16 for the annual national meeting of the American Bamboo Society. The public is also invited to attend; ABS membership is not required.
Over the weekend, many bamboo specialists will speak about growing, propagating and collecting bamboo as well as building with it. Members of the local ABS chapter will share their top 10 lists on the following bamboo-related topics: favorite species, propagation techniques, nursery trends and Bay Area bamboo gardens.
Meeting participants also have the opportunity to shop among a wide variety of bamboo craft items for sale, including furniture, jewelry, flooring, flues, baskets, screens and fences. At various times over the weekend, there will also be demonstrations of bamboo bonsai, Japanese sumi-e brush painting and other bamboo crafts. Additionally, a free-standing bamboo sculpture will be built on the Hakone grounds by Akio Hizume of Japan.
On Oct. 15 at 11 a.m., members of the Northern California ABS chapter hold a sale of unusual bamboo.
Cost of the bamboo weekend is $135, which includes two lunches and one dinner. No partial registration is available. To register, mail a check, money order or credit card information to the NCC/ABS, in care of David King, 480 West "I" St., Benicia, 94510; fax questions to Rosalie Ross at 415.421.0931, or email rosyross@aol.com.
