    SUSD to address new modernization

The Saratoga Union School District is holding two meetings this week to discuss plans for modernization projects at Foothill Elementary School and Argonaut Elementary School set to begin next year.

The public is invited to the two meetings, in which school board members, SUSD superintendent Mary Gardner, school principals and the school site committees are scheduled to share plans and address questions.

The meetings will be held on Oct. 6 at 7 p.m. at Foothill and on Oct. 7 at 7 p.m. at Argonaut.

    Seniors offered sale, health fair

The Saratoga Senior Center will sponsor a health fair and its annual Super Sale on Oct. 16, the center's major fundraiser of the year.

Previously, the center had planned on welcoming the Life Line Screening Service to provide blood testing, but the organization has cancelled its services that day.

However, the health fair is still offering its flu shot clinic and Mobile Screening Unit, which screens for vision and hearing problems and diabetes. Residents can get $5 flu shots and light refreshments from 9 a.m. to noon.

Also during the health fair, residents will be selling everything from used furniture and jewelry to small appliances and toys.

Local environment focus of League talk

The Los Gatos, Saratoga and Monte Sereno chapter of the League of Women Voters will present the second installment of its sustainability forum on Oct. 14 as Steve Breon, an environmental advocate with the Audubon Society of Santa Clara Valley, talks about our local environment.

Breon's work includes working toward the preservation and restoration of creeks, open space, wetlands and rare species' habitats.

Through its discussion series, the League is attempting to focus communities on sustainability--a concept in which a community has achieved a self-determined quality of life that it is committed to be sustainable for many generations.

Breon will be speaking at 7:30 p.m. at the Saratoga Presbyterian Church on Oct. 14. For more information, call Tat Blesch at 408.867.9574.
