Youth Basketball
The Saratoga Recreation Department is currently holding registration for youngsters in the first through sixth grades interested in playing in the 2000 Saratoga Youth Basketball League.
Games will be played on Saturdays, Jan.8-March 19, and the instructional basketball league will stress fundamentals, teamwork and sportsmanship.
Teams in the third- to sixth-grade divisions will practice one evening during the week and each player will receive a uniform shirt and a team picture.
Players in the third and fourth grades will play for teams formed by zones. Players in the fifth and sixth grades will attend a skills assessment session on Dec. 14 at Saratoga High School to determine team placement.
The first/second-grade division is in its first year and will feature shorter baskets.

Pitching Program
An eight-week fall pitching program for baseball players ages 9-12 will run Tuesday evenings, Oct. 26-Dec. 14, in the gym at West Valley Community College in Saratoga.
The program teaches fundamentals, arm care and defensive skills. Players 9-10 attend at 7 p.m., players 11-12 at 8 p.m.

Pumpkin Run
Celebrate Halloween early by participating in the annual Half Moon Bay Pumpkin Run on Oct. 17, 8 a.m. The event features a 10K run, a 2.4-mile fun run and a half-mile kids' run/walk.
The race begins at Hatch Elementary School, corner of Lorraine Avenue and Miramontes Street in Half Moon Bay. The cost is $17 for adults, $16 for runners 16 and under, and $10 for the kids' run.

Bombers in SJ
Roller Derby action will return to San Jose on Nov. 6 when the California Bombers will take on the Mid West Royal Rollers in the gym at Mt. Pleasant High School in East San Jose.
The Bombers are led by women's captain Gwen Miller and the high-scoring Vicki McEwen, and by men's coach Frank Apodaca.
