ObituariesVincent Mingrone Saratoga resident and optometrist Dr. Vincent J. Mingrone died July 8 at the age of 66. Born Aug. 18, 1931, in Derby, Conn., Mingrone earned a bachelor's degree from Fairfield University, then traveled west for his doctor of optometry degree, graduating from the Southern California College of Optometry in 1955. He served as an optometry officer in the U.S. Navy for four years, working at various hospitals throughout the United States and Europe. Mingrone and his wife, Marge, settled in Los Gatos in the late 1950s and then moved to Saratoga in the early 1960s. In 1959, he began a private practice at Westgate Professional Center. Colleague Dr. Allan Freid joined the practice in 1970; upon Freid's 1985 retirement, Mingrone's son Mark joined the practice, where he remains today. Mingrone belonged to many professional and community organizations in which he served as a member, board member or officer. These included the Santa Clara County Optometric Society, the California Optometric Association, the American Optometric Association, the Santa Clara County Blind Center and Low Vision Clinic, the Saratoga Lions Club, the District 4-C6 Lions International and the Saratoga Chamber of Commerce. Survivors include wife Marge Mingrone of Saratoga; sons Stephen, Mark and Matthew Mingrone; daughters Katherine Nootz and Christina Mingrone; and 11 grandchildren. Memorial services have been held. Donations may be made to the Vincent J. Mingrone Memorial Scholarship Endowment Fund, in care of Bellarmine College Preparatory, 850 Elm St., San Jose, 95126. James Marley James A. Marley of Saratoga died Aug. 24 at the age of 65 while in Silverdale, Wash. Born July 16, 1933, in Philadelphia, he graduated from St. Joseph's University in Philadelphia and went on to earn a doctorate in chemistry from the University of Pennsylvania. He worked at Corning Glass in Corning, N.Y., and Boston before moving to California, where he took a job at Signetics Corporation and later Lockheed-Martin. Marley held dozens of patents in solid-state circuitry and excelled at design work in photonics. His professional memberships included IEEE and the National Vacuum Society. Marley was an avid gardener who enjoyed cooking with his homegrown produce. He was also a self-taught investor with a successful track record. Survivors include son and daughter-in-law Steffan and Jo Marley of Albuquerque, N.M.; and daughter Susan Marley of Bainbridge Island, Wash. He was predeceased by wife Kathleen and son Christopher. Memorial services have been held. Donations may be made to the American Heart Association or the American Lung Association. Kenneth Givens Former Saratoga resident Kenneth Earl Givens died Aug. 30 at his home in North Carolina. He was 78. Givens was born March 4, 1920, in Kokomo, Ind. He served in the U.S. Air Force and achieved the rank of master sergeant. He was preceded in death by wife Mary Jane Duddy Givens. Survivors include daughters Patricia Duggins and Barbara June Young of Sacramento and Jane Horneman of Waxhaw, N.C.; six grandchildren; brothers Jamee Givens and William Gene Givens of Kokomo and Harry Givens of Florida; and sister Lora Belle Irby of Kokomo. Memorial services have been held, with interment at Madronia Cemetery in Saratoga. Jack Foote Jack Foote of Saratoga died Sept. 13 at the age of 74, following heart surgery. A native of Oakland, Foote settled in Saratoga in 1974 and served as a dean at San Jose State University, a job from which he retired in 1989. Upon his graduation from UC-Berkeley, Foote served in the U.S. Navy and then spent 15 years doing industrial research work for Standard Oil of California before attending graduate school. Among his interests was computers, including building them. His computer skills were often utilized by the local branch of the League of Women Voters--to which his wife, Marjorie, belonged--and the American Association of University Women. He and his wife also established the AAUW International Fellowship in honor of his and Marjorie's parents. Foote was predeceased by daughter Claudia. Survivors include wife of 53 years Marjorie Foote of Saratoga; daughter Patricia Foote of Fullerton; son James Foote of Cupertino; granddaughters Margaret and Elizabeth Keig; brother Francis S. Foote Jr. of Oregon; and several nieces and nephews. Memorial services have been held. Donations may be made to a favorite charity.
