Saratoga NewsOn CampusScholarship tips offered at Saratoga High School The Athletic Booster Club of Saratoga High School is sponsoring a "How to Win a Sports Scholarship" seminar on Oct. 20 at 7:30 p.m. in the little theater. Penny Hastings, co-author of How to Win a Sports Scholarship, will be the guest speaker. Students and parents can learn how to put together their own game plan and how to attract the attention of college coaches in the sea of thousands of other high school athletes. Look up school info on greatschools.net A new Web site featuring information on K-12 public schools in Santa Clara and San Mateo counties is now available to the community at www.greatschools.net. The site, created independently by educators, parents and business people, allows visitors to find information on schools, including comparisons of schools, who decides what children learn in schools and how other schools' art programs compare to those of schools in Saratoga. New dean to begin at West Valley College Malcolm Brodrick has been selected as the new dean of administrative services at West Valley College. Officials at WVC say Brodrick has the technical expertise and experience necessary to foster the college's continued growth and development. Brodrick has been in the West Valley- Mission College District since 1987, and with WVC since 1995. Prior to accepting the dean's position, Brodrick served as lab faculty specialist in WVC's Technology Center. He earned his bachelor's degree in history from Hofstra University, his master's in vocational education from the University of Michigan and his doctorate in higher education from Colorado State University. Saratogan named Merit semifinalist Castilleja School recently announced that Jane Moran of Saratoga has been named a semifinalist in the 45th-annual 1999 National Merit Scholarship Program. Semifinalists qualified based on their scores in the 1997 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT), which served as the screening method of entrants. To qualify as a semifinalist, Moran had to be one of the highest scorers in the state on the test. Moran is now eligible to advance to the finalist level of the competition and be considered for a Merit scholarship.
