Baylor Avenue gets stop signs

The Saratoga City Council voted to establish a four-way stop at the corner of Baylor Avenue, Grimsby Drive and Villanova Road at its Oct. 1 meeting. The move was part of the Baylor Avenue Traffic Calming Study, adopted by the council in September.

Because the intersection is under both San Jose's and Saratoga's jurisdiction, the San Jose City Council also approved the move. The city of Saratoga will install stop signs and marking on southbound Villanova and maintain and enforce traffic control on the Villanova and Baylor approaches. San Jose will maintain traffic control on the northbound Villanova and Grimsby approaches.

City officials said the stop signs should be in place within a week.

Sign ordinance topic for talk

A public hearing on the sunset clause in the city's sign ordinance is scheduled for the Oct. 15 City Council meeting at 7:30 p.m. The council will discuss repealing the clause, which prohibits the placement of signs in the public right-of-way.

Other proposed changes to the ordinance include the clarification that signs for special events for which a permit is issued may be placed in the public right-of-way if specifically approved in the permit. The clarification is designed to clear up future doubts about the legality of such signs as those used for the Rotary Art Show and Celebrate Saratoga! In addition, the city manager and the City Council will be authorized to issue special-event permits as a means of streamlining the procedure and preventing last-minute requests.
