Artists' meeting features abstract painting demo

The Saratoga Contemporary Artists (SCA) invite anyone interested in art to attend their Oct. 14 meeting, which takes place at 7 p.m. at the Saratoga Public Library, located at 13650 Saratoga Ave. Local artist Jane Hofstetter, a watercolorist, instructor, lecturer and art show juror, will do a demonstration of abstract nature painting. Hofstetter has exhibited nationally and abroad and is represented in an art book coming out this fall called The Best of Watercolor: Painting Composition.

SCA is a community organization that promotes the arts and lets artists of different levels and styles socialize, network and review each other's works. Occasionally, members meet in outdoor locales for spontaneous "paint-outs." Art shows are also arranged. The yearly membership fee for exhibiting members is $15, along with a one-time $5 initiation fee. Honorary members pay no dues. For more information, call Helen Riley at 378-7659.

Would-be travelers use computers to plan their trips

From armchair travelers who prefer the comforts of home to seasoned travelers who trek across states and countries--anyone interested in travel can benefit from "Travel and the Web," a free program on Oct. 8 at 7 p.m. at the Saratoga Library, located at 13650 Saratoga Ave.

Steve Cisler, a senior scientist with Apple Computer as well as a former librarian, teaches how to glean travel tips and information by using computer programs, the Internet and the World Wide Web. For more information, call 867-6127.

Greenbelt Alliance plans local hike

The Greenbelt Alliance, a nonprofit organization dedicated to conservation, urban planning and raising public awareness about the importance of open space and greenbelts, has organized a variety of free Greenbelt Outings throughout the fall and early winter with destinations in eight Northern California counties.

Closest to Saratoga is "Ring Around the Reservoir," which takes place Oct. 25 at Lexington Reservoir in Los Gatos. Hikers meet at 10 a.m. to traverse a four-mile course (rated "easy") around the reservoir.
