The League of Women Voters of Los Gatos-Saratoga-Monte Sereno and the American Association of University Women of Los Gatos-Saratoga are sponsoring a public presentation of pros and cons of initiatives on the Nov. 5 general election ballot. The forum will be held at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 17 in the Saratoga Library community room, 13650 Saratoga Ave.
The League sponsors a second discussion of pros and cons of initiatives at 1:30 p.m. Oct. 23 in the fireplace room at the Saratoga Senior Center, 19655 Allendale Ave.
The League also sponsors a forum for Saratoga City Council candidates at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 30 in the Saratoga Library community room. Audience questions are encouraged.
MAC Watch, a new organization dedicated to the recovery of missing children, will hold its first fund raiser on Friday, Oct. 11 at 7:30 p.m. at the Opry House, 21350 Almaden Road, San Jose.
Proceeds from the live melodrama performance will go to support the newly formed organization. Julie Perez of Saratoga founded MAC Watch in January 1995 and currently operates it from her home, pending her application for nonprofit status and a city business license. She plans to broadcast a weekly television program showing the faces of missing children.

The Los Gatos-Monte Sereno-Saratoga League of Women Voters will hear a panel address the topic of "Community Recreation, Enrichment and the Future" at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 10 at Saratoga City Hall conference room, 13777 Fruitvale Ave.
Speakers are: Phil Pabich, assistant dean of community education as West Valley-Mission Community College District; Bob Best, director of the Los Gatos-Saratoga Community Education and Recreation Department; and Joan Pisani, director of the Saratoga Recreation Department.
The speakers will give brief histories of their departments and discuss how they are funded and how they select program offerings. They will be asked to assess how they are filling the needs of the communities they represent and what challenges they face in the future.

Sierra Club's Loma Prieta Chapter/Guadalupe Group holds a general meeting Tuesday, Oct. 15 at 7:30 p.m. in Saratoga Library, Saratoga Avenue at Fruitvale Avenue.
The program features a narrated slide show by Mark Cole, a Pleasanton internist and experienced mountain climber and photographer. He will recount highlights of the long, arduous climb to the top of Mt. Everest by the Americans on Everest '95 team, plus some remarks on the medical aspects of the adventure. The public is invited. Dezi Thomas, a massage therapist and educator, will help women learn about essential oils used in healing during a program Oct. 12, from 9 a.m. to noon at the Notre Dame Provincialate in Saratoga. She will demonstrate 12 oils and how to use their healing vapors.

Koji Wada from the Kasuri Dyeworks presents a program on traditional Japanese textiles at 11 a.m. Oct. 17 at Hakone Gardens, 21000 Big Basin Way, Saratoga. He will show examples of dyed and woven textiles of cotton, silk, wool and hemp. His Berkeley shop carries these fabrics, finished kimonos, both old and new, as well as sewing and craft materials.
Over 100 items will be offered for sale. Fee is $5, and parking is free.
Los Gatos-Saratoga Branch of the American Association of University Women invites new and prospective members to an informal orientation meeting on Oct. 23 at 7:30 p.m.

The League of Conservation Voters of Santa Clara County has inaugurated an Environmental Hall of Fame with the induction of four local environmentalists.
The induction of Jim Compton of Saratoga, Nonette Hanko of Palo Alto, Florence La Riviere of Palo Alto and Frank Schiavo of San Jose took place before 200 people Sept. 19 in the Monte Sereno home of Lynne and Mark Snyder.
Compton has been a leading environmentalist for many years. His Compton Foundation supports numerous projects each year. Recent financial support has been given to Ecology Action, Save San Francisco Bay Association, Sierra Club, Greenbelt Alliance, Bay Institute, Friends of the River, Bay Area Ridge Trail Council and others.
Speakers at the inaugural event included Felicia Marcus, regional administrator of the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency, and state Senator Byron Sher.
Peter Eppinga of Saratoga has been elected to the board of directors of the Alzheimer's Association of the Greater San Francisco Bay Area.
Eppinga is an attorney in private practice, having recently retired from the financial institutions division of Sears, Roebuck, where he served as a director and senior officer. He currently serves on the board of directors of a stock-real estate investment trust.
Since 1982, he has worked with the Southern California Chapter of the Arthritis Foundation and has served on the national board for six years.
The California Legislature awarded certificates of recognition to Frank Jewett of San Jose and Donald Wolfe of Saratoga for outstanding public service as co-hosts of the weekly televised program, Issues Today. The two are producers of the program, which appears on KSAR Channel 6 in Saratoga each Tuesday at 8 p.m. and on TCI Cablevision 15A in San Jose.
Assemblyman Jim Cunneen said, "You are performing a tremendous service to the community by providing programming on issues of local public policy." The program showcases authors, leaders of charitable organizations, educators, elected officials and business and sports figures.
Jewett is a real estate banker and serves on the board of the San Jose Medical Center Charitable Foundation. Wolfe is a Saratoga city councilmember and executive director of the Silicon Valley Citizens Against Lawsuit Abuse.
