Eighteen Saratoga High School students have been named as National Merit semifinalists. They are among 14,000 semifinalists chosen nationally.
They are: Ritu Bhatnagar, Samara Cahill, Yvonne Chiu, Ron Eyat, Anne Gilbert, Lisa Hladik, Susie Kuo, Jason Li, Jennifer Liao, Robin Lin, Alissa McFarlin, Doug Ricket, Sarah Ruby, Daniel Shen, Jeremy Tavan, Ned Tozun, Kim Wachter and Charles Wang.
In addition, Bellarmine College Preparatory School announced that Saratoga residents Helmy Eltoukhy, Sujay Jaswa, Jack McKenna and Vipin Narang are National Merit semifinalists. Brian Mount and Brian Whisnant of Saratoga received letters of commendation.
National Merit recognition is determined by students' performance on the PSAT, taken in October of their junior year. Semifinalists, whose scores placed them in the 99th percentile, were selected from test scores of more than 1.1 million students.
To become finalists, students must have an outstanding record throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by their principals, submit their SAT scores and provide information about extracurricular and community activities.
Finalists will be announced in April.
