Warriors beat Prospect, off to 5-0 start in football

    By Dick Sparrer

It may have been just the first game of the league season. But Tony Santos and his Westmont football team had every reason to be a little excited after their 34-0 victory over Prospect last Friday afternoon.

The win got the Warriors off to a 1-0 start in the Santa Teresa Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League. But what's more, the game marked the halfway point in 2001 season, and the Warriors have yet to lose.

Of course, Santos would be the first to admit that the toughest part of the Westmont schedule still remains. And one of those tough games come this week when the Warriors visit Gunderson (3-2, 1-0) on Oct. 12, 3:30 p.m.

But Westmont has already strung together five wins to start the fall season, and that's one more victory than the Warriors managed a year ago.

Junior quarterback Bryen Blankenship sparked the Warriors to the 34-0 win over the Panthers last Friday. The 6-foot-4, 210-pound passer ran for two touchdowns and threw for another to lead Westmont past the Panthers.

Blankenship scored on a 6-yard run in the first quarter and junior running back Mike Jiosa blasted over for a 1-yard TD run in the first to give Westmont the early lead. Ben Peterson converted after each touchdown, and the Warriors were up 14-0 at the first buzzer.

Blankenship ran one in from the 5 in the second quarter, then tossed a 24-yard TD pass to Todd Bethke for a score. Two more Peterson kicks gave the Warriors a 28-0 cushion at the intermission.

Westmont closed out the scoring in the third quarter when Matt Davis covered a blocked punt in the end zone.

The win left the Warriors 5-0 for the year and 1-0 in league play. Prospect slipped to 0-5 for the season and 0-2 in the division.

The Panthers will chase their first win this week when they head to Silver Creek on Oct. 13, 1:30 p.m. The Raiders are also winless in two league games, but are 2-3 for the year.

    Falcons wins big

Scott Moran threw for three touchdowns and ran for another to lead Saratoga to an impressive 36-13 non-league win over Monta Vista.

Moran, who was a near-perfect 10 of 11 through the air, scored on an 8-yard run in the first quarter, but the Matadors also scored and the clubs headed into the second locked in a 7-7 tie.

Saratoga broke the tie when junior fullback Jeff Lee blasted over from the 2 in the second period. Moran upped the lead to 21-0 with a 19-yard TD toss to senior tight end Troy Follmar before the half. A.J. Weitsman kicked his third extra point, and the Falcons were in command.

Saratoga pulled away even more in the third quarter. Moran hooked up with Follmar for a 44-yard touchdown pass and, after a safety gave the Falcons two more points, the senior passer hit Devin Schrock with a 15-yard scoring toss.

The Falcons, now 3-2 for the year, will get back to league play this week. Saratoga will visit Santa Clara at Townsend Field on Oct. 12, 7:30 p.m. The Bruins are 2-3 for the year and 0-2 in league play after losing 21-14 to Palo Alto last week.

Saratoga is 0-1 in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League.
