Prospect unbeaten in girls tennis race

    By Dick Sparrer

They did it last year in the West Valley Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League.

And it looks like they're at it again this year--but in the Santa Teresa Division.

Prospect and Westmont battled it out for the West Valley Division title in girls tennis a year ago. And they're going it again this fall, just up a notch in the BVAL.

The Panthers are 9-0 in division play after beating Leigh 6-1 and Pioneer 7-0 last week. Westmont sits a notch back at 8-1 after beating Overfelt 6-1 and Oak Grove 4-3 last week. The only mar on the Westmont record is a loss to--that's right--Prospect.

Julie Martin won twice at No. 1 singles last week to lead the Panthers to back-to-back wins.

Martin posted a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 1 to start Prospect on the road to the 6-1 win over Leigh. Marina Shlyapina won by default at No. 3 singles and Elaine Tang won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 4.

Natalia Kriyama teamed with Katherine Gazlay for a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 1 doubles. Judy Tang and Harroop Singh won 6-0, 6-4 at No. 2 doubles and Helen Yi and Connie Tang won 6-0, 6-3 at No. 3.

The Panthers came back to blank Pioneer 7-0 to push their season record to an impressive 10-2. Martin, Michelle Stern, Shlyapina and E. Tang were singles winners, and the Kriyama-Gazlay, J. Tang-Singh and Yi-C. Tang doubles teams all came up winners.

Westmont's Anna Vugdalic won twice at No. 1 singles to start the Warriors on the road to consecutive league wins last week.

Vugdalic posted a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles in the 6-1 victory over Overfelt. Megan Clapp won 6-0, 3-6, 6-2 at No. 2 singles, Katherine Bamford won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3 and Dana Nguyen won 6-1, 6-2 at No. 4.

Natalie Phipps and Leslie Huang joined forces for a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 1 doubles and Virginia Nguyen and Kim Arnault won 6-4, 6-3 at No. 2.

Vugdalic pulled out a clutch 5-7, 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 1 singles to get Westmont going in the 4-3 win over Oak Grove. Bamford and D. Nguyen also added singles wins for Westmont.

Saratoga is off to a 6-1 start in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League after a tight 4-3 win over Gunn and a 5-2 victory over Los Altos last week.

Amanda Wise posted a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 1 singles to start the Falcons on the road to the 4-3 win over the Titans.

Saratoga, now 12-1 for the year, started the week with a 6-1 nonleague win over Fremont and finished it off with the 5-2 win over Los Altos.

In other local action, Belinda Rungsea sparked Lynbrook to three straight wins last week with three wins at No. 1 singles.

Rungsea won 6-1, 6-3 at No. 1 singles to pace the Viskings to a 5-2 nonleague win over Los Altos. She came back with a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 1 in a 7-0 league win over Cupertino and she won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1 in a 4-3 El Camino win over Santa Clara.

The Vikings are now 7-0 in the El Camino and 9-2 for the year.

    Falcons win two

The Saratoga girls field hockey team pulled out a pair of wins last week to get off to a 2-0 start in the league season.

The Falcons whipped Leland 3-0 and edged Monta Vista 2-1 to jump off to a 2-0 start in the Santa Teresa Division of the BVAL. The Falcons are 5-1-2 for the year.

In other local action, Westmont lost 2-1 to Cupertino despite a first-half goal by Jenny Brown, then fell 2-0 to Los Altos to start the West Valley Division season.

Prospect lost 5-1 to St. Francis despite a goal by Annie Piggins and lost 1-0 to Lynbrook. The Vikings had fallen 3-0 to Mitty earlier in the week.

    Levy a kill leader

Marie Levy knocked down 16 kills to lead the Saratoga girls volleyball team to a 16-14, 13-15, 15-12, 15-11 win over Mountain View in El Camino Division play last week.

The win was the fifth straight in league play for the Falcons, but Saratoga lost 15-12, 8-15, 11-15, 15-12, 15-8 to Santa Clara later in the week creating a tie for first place in the division. Both clubs are 5-1 in league play, and the Falcons are 9-5 for the year.
