Council says no to POST request
The Saratoga City Council adopted a resolution Oct. 4, urging residents to continue to donate to the Bear Creek Redwoods Park, near Highway 17.
Citing the need to first fund improvements to the city's own parks and trails, council members decided not to contribute money to the project, but stated their verbal support for it and encouraged Saratoga citizens to donate. Councilwoman Ann Waltonsmith advocated making a donation on behalf of the city.
Last June, the Peninsula Open Space Trust worked with Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District to purchase all 1,065 acres of Bear Creek Redwoods. POST's expenses now total $10.5 million, and the group has approached governments, business and private foundations for assistance in paying off the loan balance. POST requested that Saratoga contribute $20,000 for the open space preserve.
The Los Gatos Town Council donated $50,000 and Monte Sereno's donated $12,000. POST has collected $233,070 from 844 Saratoga residents.
