Hakone Gardens plans classes on drawing skills

As part of the various art classes it offers to the community, Saratoga's Hakone Gardens, at 21000 Big Basin Way, offers a one-day workshop on ikebana, the traditional Japanese art of flower arranging, on Oct. 22, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Instructor Kika Shibata has reached the highest degree of proficiency, riji, in the Sogetsu School, which believes in an ikebana with no limits, where anything can be used to create artistic displays.

Cost is $45 for the full day or $25 for a half day. A Japanese box lunch is available for an additional $7. Deadline to register is Oct. 18. For information, call Shibata at 408.279.8342, or fax her at 408.279.8345.

'Bad Habits' come to West Valley college theater

The West Valley College theater arts department presents Bad Habits, a set of two one-act plays written by Terrence McNally. The play focuses on two very unique sanitariums. Dunelawn is the site of an expensive retreat for the unhappily married, where a zany Dr. Pepper encourages patients to indulge in their "bad habits." Ravenswood is quite the opposite--saintly Dr. Toynbee injects straight-jacketed patients with tranquilizing drugs to calm those same urges. The play is not recommended for children.

Bad Habits runs Oct. 20-22 and 26-29, in the WVC Chamber Theatre in Music Building Room 12. The campus is at 14000 Fruitvale Ave. For show times, ticket prices or directions, call 408.741.2058.

Toad Prince hops over to perform at Villa Montalvo

As part of its Performing Arts Series, Villa Montalvo presents the Tears of Joy Theatre in a puppet show interpretation of a classic Chinese fairy tale, The Toad Prince, on Oct. 29, at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. in the Carriage House Theatre. Recognized nationally for its innovative style, Tears of Joy uses creatively costumed, rod-style puppets to act out family-style theater. Cost is $7.50 to $15 per person. Villa Montalvo is at 15400 Montalvo Road, Saratoga. For more information, call 408.961.5858.
